| Children learn to
read at different ages. Although almost all of them have achieved
basic proficiency by age 7-8, a significant minority figure it
out, usually on their own, several years earlier. Despite the fact
that many of these precocious readers are of very high
intelligence, they are still young children who may be
ill-equipped emotionally to understand or enjoy stories written at a grade
level they are capable of reading. Just because a kindergartner is
reading at a fourth grade level, do you really want her reading a
fourth grade book? Does she?
Wooden Cat Books fills this
niche by providing high quality children's literature with an
intentional mismatch between reading level and subject matter.
Each book carries a logo on the front cover identifying both the
reading grade level and the approximate age of the subject matter
interest, allowing parents and teachers maximum flexibility in
selecting individually appropriate books.
Because this is a group of
children who obviously devour books, Wooden Cat hopes to provide a
large and diverse list for them to choose from. We appreciate your
patience as we begin the process of creating catalogue listings
for your students' and children's enjoyment.
