Frequently
Asked Questions
|
| Are
you a vanity press? |
|
Absolutely not. We do not charge authors for publishing books or
submitting manuscripts. We pay to produce books up front, and we
take the risk of winding up with a roomful of them if they don't
sell. That's what publishing means.
|
| Why
don't you have any books in your catalogue? |
|
We are a new
publishing house, just starting out as we look to build our
catalogue with quality children's literature. January 2006
update: We now have six titles to complete Volume 1 of our catalogue,
and three manuscripts accepted for Volume 2.
|
| Tell
me about your books. Do you use POD technology? |
|
Wooden Cat plans to
produce primarily hardcover books for school use, although we
anticipate a strong retail market as well. We use offset printing,
not Print on Demand technology.
|
| Do
you pay advances and royalties? |
|
We do not pay
advances at this time. We do pay royalties based on cover price,
beginning with the first book sold.
|
| Do I
need an agent to submit to Wooden Cat? |
|
No; we are pleased to
accept unagented submissions.
|
| How
do you plan to market your books? |
|
Wooden Cat Books
markets directly to school districts via their Reading Specialists
for use in the classroom setting. Once we have at least ten titles
in our catalogue we plan to apply to Ingram for a distribution
contract so that our titles can be ordered by brick-and-mortar
bookstores.
|
| What
about editing, illustrating, and cover art? |
|
In-house editing is
provided. Illustrators are welcome to submit samples of their work
and join the Wooden Cat team (guidelines
here.) Author input is encouraged for both illustrations and
cover art.
|
| Why
should I send my manuscript to you instead of to a more
established publisher? |
|
If you relish the
challenge of thinking outside the box by writing off-level books
for precocious readers, and if you are intrigued by the idea of
getting in on the ground floor of a new and exciting publishing
venture, we welcome your submissions. If that doesn't sound like
your cup of tea, we wish you the best of luck with other
publishing companies. |
